The main issue with surface anchors is the legality that surronds them. Some states, such as mine (New Jersey) have totally outlawed surface anchors, including the usage of biopsy punches. Whereas other states, such as Pennslyvannia, allow surface anchors, as long as they are done the traditional method with a piercing needle, but biopsy punchesare still illegal. But on the reverse, thereare nummerous states that fully allow both biopsy punches and surface anchors. The shops around may be refusing simply because they don’t have either the right equipment to do it the punching method, or a piercer who knows how to do it the traditonal way. Do a little research about the shop 45 minutes away that is willing to do it, find out what their method is, and then do some research into the legality of surface anchors in your state. But overall, a properly perform surface anchor, done either method, combined with proper aftercare, is completely safe. However, do keep in mind, simply due to the nature of surface anchors, they are very prone to growing out over time, as well as getting snagged on things depending on their placement.
